about Ron Backwell
Painting for Ron seemed to evolve in his later life. As a child he liked to draw eagles on his schoolbook bags, and from time to time he sketched in pencil and pen & ink, but it was not until 1984 when he was given a watercolour kit from his wife Sharon and his sons Doug & Marc for his birthday, that he discovered the joy of painting.
Unknown to Ron, Sharon and her friend Carol Gilbank, entered a few of his pieces in a juried art show where he received an honourable mention. With this encouragement he took a few workshops and has never lost the bug.
Ron had his first solo art show Reflections in 1995 at the Northview Community Library in Oshawa Ontario, and has shown at Camp Samac Art Festival, the Oshawa Fall Art Festival, the Spring Studio Tour, Cobourg Art Festival and Fenelon Falls Ontario. His art has won awards in Ontario and Texas where he lived for a number of years. His works are hanging in private collections in England, Scotland, Australia, Arizona, Texas, North Carolina, New York, British Columbia and Ontario.
Working in pencil, charcoal, pen & ink, watercolour and acrylics, Ron captures an assortment of themes from the world around us from landscapes, seascapes, boats, buildings to fields of flowers, butterflies, animals and recently portraits. Ron still likes to draw eagles as well as other birds and animals but has a passion for lamps that reflects the name of his studio.
Ron is a life member in the Oshawa Art Association and is active with the Cobourg Art Club.
